I-League: We have always been a tough team to beat, says Real Kashmir coach

KOLKATA: Real Kashmir are one of the favourites for the I-League title this season. They are unbeaten after six matches and currently have 10 points in their kitty. Before the team plays their seventh match of the campaign against Neroca FC on Saturday, head coach David Robertson spoke about the season so far and the challenges ahead in an e-mail interview.
Excerpts:
How would you analyze the six matches that you have played so far?
We have done well so far in a very close league.We have a good defensive record and have scored a number of goals. In two of our drawn games, we had done enough to win but that was not eventually the case. As each game passes, we are getting stronger and stronger. We added a number of new players to our squad, probably the most during my time at the club. We are gelling together more and more with every passing day.
How difficult is it to play while staying in a bio-bubble?
We always keep the atmosphere light-hearted and have a fun-filled environment. We make sure all our players are in good spirits. We like to joke around a lot to ease any tension and pressure. We have done quizzes too.
It is often said that attack wins matches and defence wins titles. Real Kashmir have conceded the least number of goals so far. How important is it to keep the backline tight for a good performance in the I-League?
We have always been a tough team to beat. It’s important that this is the case for us. We are creating a lot of chances and need to start converting them. The league is always close and it’s so important to keep picking up points in every game.
There is a different format in place this time. How is Real Kashmir approaching the league this time? Are you going in with the same mindset as the previous years or are you looking at it differently?
We always have the same approach. We focus on one game at a time, do what we can to secure points in every game. Then we will see where we are at the split.
Real Kashmir are definitely one of the contenders for the title. Which other team/teams have impressed you so far?
I feel the nature and competitiveness of the I-League is like no other league I have witnessed, as any team can beat another team on any given day. I feel any team can win the league because it is that close. With every round of games, the league standings change.
